Cravings can be your body’s way of letting you know it’s not getting something it needs, such as a specific vitamin or mineral. Having certain cravings, such as for chocolate or other sweets, is also often linked to how you feel emotionally.   You don’t have to completely deprive yourself of the treats you enjoy. The key is understanding why you are craving them and making sure that your overall diet is balanced and nutritious.   Learning a little more about the connection between food and mood can empower you to control your cravings rather than letting them control you.   Why We Get Cravings A food craving is defined as an intense desire for a specific food. Most people experience cravings at one time or another,?? and there are many factors that determine their frequency and intensity.   Common Causes of Food Cravings Psychological or emotional stressCertain prescription and over-the-counter medicationsHormone imbalances (especially in relation to pregnancy and the menstrual cycle)Physical and mental health conditions (such as type 1 diabetes, depression, and eating disorders) Research has shown that cravings can also be driven by memories rather than bodily cues.?? Consistently having a certain food at a certain time creates a mental linkâ€"you might say it almost “feeds” the craving. For example, if you grab a snack from the vending machine at work at the same time each afternoon, your desire for the snack may be less about satisfying hunger and more out of habit.   How to Curb Sugar Cravings Sweets and decadent meals are often associated with vivid memories of food at social gatherings, such as holidays, parties, and family get-togethers. If you find yourself thinking about your Grandma’s molasses cookies or your mom’s famous apple pie, you may be missing your family members, not the food.   It might sound like cravings are “all in your head,” but that doesn’t mean youre imagining them. In fact, theyre most often based in biology. In 2004, researchers used fMRI machines to look at peoples brains as they experienced food cravings.??  They noticed similarities in the neuroanatomy of food-craving brains and those of people who were addicted to drugs and alcohol (who may also experience cravings for these substances). Findings from similar studies have helped researchers understand the phenomenon of food addiction,?? which can be another factor if someone is experiencing persistent cravings.   The way the mind and body (especially the gut) are connected, the mechanisms that drive hunger, as well as our unique memories, tastes, and dietary needs make food cravings very complex.   The Serotonin Theory One theory about food cravings involves serotonin, a neurotransmitter needed for mood regulation. Researchers believe that having an imbalance of serotonin in the brain contributes to the development of depression.     When youre craving carbs, youre usually being drawn to foods that encourage serotonin production.?? In a sense, reaching for sugary, carbohydrate-rich foods can be a way of self-medicating depression. Research seems to support this theory: Having a meal high in carbohydrates tends to raise levels of serotonin, while a high-fat, high-protein meal may reduce them.?? The effect of carb cravings on low mood may be stronger when people eat food with a high glycemic index, such as candy, as these cause a higher peak in blood sugar levels.   Why Youre Craving Junk Food The Role of Tryptophan Tryptophan is an amino acid that is a precursor of serotonin. That means your body needs tryptophan to make serotonin. Tryptophan may also produce a calming effect through interactions that take place within the realm of the gut-brain axis. Several studies have proposed that low levels of tryptophan can increase hunger and drive food cravings, as well as contribute to symptoms of depression.?? A diet with plenty of high-tryptophan foods may be helpful in boosting mood and managing cravings. Tryptophan is naturally found in protein-rich foods such as seafood, eggs, and poultry, and can also be taken in the form of a supplement. Chocolate Cravings Researchers have isolated certain alkaloids in chocolate that may raise the levels of serotonin in the brain.?? These studies have speculated that cravings for chocolate (so-called chocoholism) may have a biological basis with serotonin deficiency being one factor. In some cases, feeling like you need chocolate might indicate you’re not getting enough magnesium in your diet. Although chocolate (particularly dark chocolate) does contain some magnesium, nuts and legumes also contain magnesium and don’t have as much sugar and are generally more satisfying.   Chocolate also contains “drug-like” constituents such as anandamides, caffeine, and phenylethylamine, which can wield a powerful influence on mood. People who feel addicted to chocolate may be feeling the one-two punch of chocolate and sugar, thus satisfying their need for more serotonin. How to Cope With Food Cravings While you might feel better at the moment, overindulging in sweets to cope with stress has long term physical consequences such as weight gain. There are also emotional consequences. Over time, a high-sugar diet may worsen symptoms of depression (especially if you tend to feel guilty about having or giving in to cravings).   There are some ways you can learn to cope not only with cravings but what is causing them. It’s important to address what’s really driving you to reach for a cookie when you’re upset so you can better care for your mind and body.     Acknowledge Behaviors Feelings Practice becoming more aware of your emotional triggers for eating. The next time you pick up a comfort food, stop and ask yourself why youre reaching for it. Feeling sad, anxious, or lonely? Identify your feelings, then pause and reflect on the action you usually take (such as reaching for a sweet treat). Try replacing comfort food with another comforting, enjoyable activity, such as going for a walk, taking a warm bath, or curling up with a good book.   Sometimes, you might realize that you’re not particularly upsetâ€"but just bored. Eating is a physical, emotional, and often a social activity, so it makes sense to pursue it if you need some stimulation. To break the habit, practice the same type of awareness as you do when you’re feeling down and “swap” the action of reaching for a snack for another activity.   It can also help to make sure you always have healthy snacks on hand. That way, if you are tempted to reach for something out of boredom, youll be less likely to pick something high in fat and sugar. Healthy Snacks If Youre Prone to Eating When Youre Bored Get Active Eat Well If you’re working on finding new activities to replace snacking or distract yourself from cravings, you may want to try using the opportunity to exercise. Regular physical activity stimulates “feel-better” endorphins, which can help improve your mood.   As you’re tuning in to your body, you may also find that there are times when you think you’re hungry, but you’re actually dehydrated! When you first feel a craving, reach for your water bottle or fill up a glass of water first. You may find this was just what your body needed.   After you’ve rehydrated, check back in with your body. If you’re still feeling hungry, the next step is to pause and think about what to eat. What you’re hankering for at the moment may not be what your body really needs.   Foods That Fight Depression Practice Mindfulness Moderation Similar to how your mind might think you’re hungry when you’re actually thirsty, the meaning of a particular craving may be more complex than it seems. This is where practicing mindfulness can be helpful.     Sugar cravings are amplified and most intense when you’re hungry. If you go too long without a meal or a snack, your body is likely to start looking for a quick source of energy. While this might address your hunger now, you aren’t likely to stay feeling satisfied until your next meal.   Sugar and fat stimulate hunger,?? making it more likely you’ll end up eating beyond the need to satisfy your craving if you reach for these foods. When you’re truly hungry, choose nutritious foods that will address your hunger and provide your body with the energy it needs. If you still want dessert after a balanced meal, allow yourself a small taste. But if you’ve had something filling and satisfying to eat, you may find that you no longer want a treat. Avoid completely depriving yourself and don’t beat yourself up if you “give in” to a craving. Focus on looking for healthier substitutes instead. For example, choose a small serving of dark chocolate avocado mousse instead of a chocolate bar. Or allow yourself the dessert you really wantâ€"but only have one small portion.   Mindful eating helps you plan meals and snacks intentionally, rather than mindlessly grazing all day. You may find it useful to keep a food journal, meal diary, or use an app to help you track. Remember: No food is “bad” in and of itself. It’s the quantity and frequency that determine how the foods impact your overall health.   An Easy Printable Food Journal Talk to Your Doctor If you’ve tried addressing your cravings on your own without success, you may want to talk to your doctor. Sometimes, cravings for certain foods can be a sign of an underlying health condition. For example, you might crave certain foods if you are deficient in essential vitamins and minerals. Medications can stimulate appetite or cause blood sugar problems, including drugs used to treat depression and bipolar disorder.  Other prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect your appetite as well.   If you have constant sugar cravings, talk to your doctor about the medications you’re taking. You may be able to adjust the dose or switch to a different drug. If not, once your doctor is on board, youll be able to work together on developing strategies for coping with cravings and their cause. 5 Tips for Handling Food Cravings

The poem On the Subway by Sharon Olds plays off its title to convey a sense of uncertainty, dread, fear, and urban tension. The poem itself details the feelings experienced by the speaker as she sits on the subway, though the subway itself is not mentioned in the poem itself. The situation is set by the title, and this makes all that follows clear as far as its meaning is concerned. The poet creates a dramatic situation through the eyes of one participant, and while nothing really happens beyond two people observing one another, the poem says much about urban life, racial relations, and accompanying fears. The poet attempts to lay bare the similarities and differences between the life of a Caucasian person and that of an African American person by contrasting two people of this description through the poem. Using a vast array of poetic devices, imagery and traditional racial stereotypes; the poet develops the insight into the connections, separations, needs and wants of these two societal entities. The poet utilizes a lot of imagery in the poem, most vividly dark and light as well as animal imagery to contrast her two characters. With the two lines in black sneakers laced with white (line 2-3) and I am wearing dark fur, (line 11); poet shows that each of them, although they have different skin pigments, contain aspects of dark and light. This is very significant, as it reinforces the fact that the race is merely skin color, and that underneath all of this we are all the same, although the poet takes it further than this, showing aspects of dark and light in what they are wearing on the outside. The poet insinuates through this comparison that not only are we the same on the inside, but each of us strives for a small aspect of the other world. The boys white lace and the speakers fur coat represent the struggle for equilibrium between these aspects. The poet uses a lot of animal imagery as well, to describe the two characters, and to dig down and show the primitive nature and similarities of the two people. The line He is wearing Red, like the inside of the body exposed. I am wearing dark fur, the whole skin of an animal taken and used, (line 9-13) shows that the boy represents the inside of an animal, and the speaker represents the outside. This is used by the poet to enforce the idea that each character is only part of the puzzle. Without skin, an animal would die, but without insides, an animal would never live. The poet uses animal imagery in the poem On the Subway to show the deep connection between the speaker and the boy. The tone shifts at the end of the poem. Here, it is clear that the speaker is trying to gain an understanding of the relationship between the white world and that of the black boy. At first, she realized that they are different because he is black and I am white (line 21-22). The image of the black cotton (line 25) alludes to slavery, again referring to the scars, or distinctions, imposed by white society. Aside from the various connections established by the poet between the boy and the speaker, the poet utilizes a lot of racial stereotypes to show the distance between the characters who exists despite the close ties and connection that they share. Lines such as he has the casual look of a mugger (line 7-8) and He could take my coat so easily (line 16) develop the psyche of the speaker and her instant fear of the boy due to the color of his skin. This helps to develop the theme of the ridiculousness of racism. People should not have all of these preconceived notions of people based on the color of their skin. This is especially important to look at, because of Sharon Olds being an American poet. American society is one of many races and nationalities, but a rift has always existed between the African American and Caucasian populations, dating back to slavery. My grandmother on the other hand was always very affectionate with me. My parents were divorced long before I can even remember. My mother was married several times and she always openly displayed affection towards her new husband for at least a little while. My parents never really displayed a lot of affection towards me or my little brother. My mother was around most of the time. She made it to almost every wrestling match, football game, and baseball game. My father on the other hand was never there. I have just recently started speaking to my mother again after eight years of silence. My father and I are business acquaintances more than any thing else. I think I have told him I loved him a total of two maybe three times. Once upon a time I was a very cold individual and I eventually learned to be warm and affectionate but I really don’t like it. Being warm and affectionate causes to much heartach e and pain, so I have decided to return to the old me. It is just so much easier. The funny thing is that I want my spouse or mate to be a very affectionate person. It makes me feel good when they are. I also want my spouse to be understanding to the fact that I have to work very hard to be affectionate. As far as kids go I have never wanted them, but the older I get I think I might want them. I believe if I ever have kids I want them to be reared to the fact that they should so affection but to realize that they could get hurt and that is just a part of life. I acquired my sex education from watching television and from my mother at the age of thirteen. She handed me a box of condoms and gave me the birds and the bee’s talk. She said the most important thing was to make sure both parties are completely satisfied. I lost my virginity at the age of thirteen so my attitude toward sex approaching my marriage is that it was very important. I expected my mate to have the same attitude. How do I categorize my parent’s marriages? My parent’s marriages were all of conflict. My home life was never that great. That explains why I was emancipated at the age sixteen and had my own apartment. Life was much better on my own. I was able to finish High School and put myself through flight school and I am almost through with college. My parents when they were married tended to settle their differences by arguing and yelling. There marriage was one of authority and not of democracy. My mother is was and probably always will be a person that will always boss. How I deal with conflict depends on what type of conflict it is. If I am at home and the cause of the conflict really matters I try to be democratic. If I really don’t care about the root cause of the conflict I’m pretty passive. When it comes to being at work, if the conflict is between my captain and I it is important that it be a democratic discussion but with the final authority resting solely on the captain. If the conflict is between me and ramp personnel I am a very authoritarian. I am currently legally married, but I am going through a divorce at this time. What ever way I tried to settle conflicts it didn’t work out for me. I have come to the conclusion that if one person does not want to settle the conflict it will not be settled no matter the technique used to solve them. I only have one sibling. I have a younger brother. He is four years younger than me and has a different father. I guess that technically makes use half brothers. My relationship with Ryan (my younger brother) as a child was one of contempt and anger. Ryan’s father was still around up until I turned thirteen. I had real jealousy issues with him for that and for the fact that he has and still is treated differently than I am. Even though we are brother we have two totally different personalities. His is one of laziness and freeloading and mine is harder working and determination. The older Ryan and I got the worse our relationship got. It took my mothers four husband Ron to bring us together again. Ryan was very close to Ron and they had an amazing relationship. If an onlooker wouldn’t have known any different they would say that they were father and son. Ron was killed in a car crash when Ryan was sixteen and he handled it very badly. He was a wreck and need ed not only emotional support but also a stable home to live in. My wife and I took my little brother into our home and let him live there until he decided to move back to our mothers. Finally my brother and I have a good relationship. Being the oldest sibling and the most financially stable has its strains and benefits; the biggest strain is that not only my brother but my mother look to me for advice. They also look to me to take care of problems and help them out financially as well. My self and my family are of Christian faith. We celebrate Christmas, Easter, Lint, and all other Christian and national holidays. We never really had a true tradition for any of them. We do however have a tradition for the opening day of hunting season. Ever since I can remember my brother and I and all of my cousins would take the opening day of hunting season off school or work to all go hunting as a family. Opening day and my grandmothers birthday are about the only times that our entire family gets together to do anything as a group. My approach to life has changed over the years. I used to be a pretty positive person and always gave people the benefit of the doubt. I trusted people and never looked over their shoulder to make sure they were doing the right thing. My attitude changed recently actually. Now I am a negative person and don’t really trust many people. The cause of the change is the ongoing divorce with my wife and a recent date. I trusted my wife with everything including my deepest darkest secrets and now all of that is being used against me. She is using it to basically blackmail me into giving more to her in the divorce settlement. I tried to be more than fair with her but that is not good enough. As far as the recent date goes it is partially my fault for trusting people. I keep a large amount of money in my truck to use as spending cash for my trash company when it needs it. I had to run into the office for a minute or two and I left her in my truck while I was gone. When I got back everything appeared normal and we went out and had a great time. After I took her home the next morning I had to go buy tires for the trash truck and I was three hundred dollars short, which in the grand scheme of things is not a ton but it is still theft. So now I can not and will not trust everyone again. I personally consider myself a rebel. The reason I do is that I am one of the few family members that do not work for the family shop or farm. I went out made my own choices and mistakes and got to where I am because of me. I am not a rebel when it comes to following proper rules and procedures I am very much a conformist when it comes to that. I really don’t get angry when I d on’t get my way, but like most things that depends on the situation. If I am informed on a good reason not to do it my way I have no problem with that. I am always open to hear other peoples ideas and thoughts because a lot of the time there thoughts and ideas are ones that I have not thought of. Or if I had then I can explain to them why I didn’t like that idea and we can discuss it further. I feel that I am a very practical person. I think practical describes me better than humaninistic and religious. The reasons behind that are I do believe in religion buts I do not live my life by it. I am more of a down to earth person. My dreams are obtainable and my lifestyle is well within my means. There is supposed to be a paragraph in here about what my ideal mate is. To be quite honest I have no idea and I’m not really in the mood or position to talk about that right now. I used to believe that I had a great understanding of my self, but with all the recent changes in my life I am forced to question that. At this point in time I don’t want a good self-understanding. My goals in life are as follows: I want to be better than my parents in regards to love, wealth, and parenting, I want to retire by the time I’m fifty, I want to have kids prior to the age of thirty-five, I want to live life like I was dying everyday, and most of all I want to be remembered as a good man. My top five values in life are happiness, wealth, love, to live life, and health. I want to be happy; I want to look forward to coming home and also going to work. Wealth incorporates a lot. To most people it means money and to others it means love and happiness in their family. To me it means both. I want it all. I just want to love someone that loves me back and not with me for monetary reasons. I want to live like I am dying everyday because I want to look back an d say I have no regrets in life. My health is the last and final thing. I put the values in order for me and the importance of them to me. I don’t want to live forever like most do. I just want to be healthy and live as long as I am meant to. I am afraid of very little. I am afraid of being alone. My grandmother is ninety years old and she has been alone for the last fifteen years and she has been miserable and I don’t want that for myself. I am afraid of not making the right decisions in my business because I have people that work for me that count on that pay check and count on their job. I am also afraid of failure. The only thing in life that I have failed at is my marriage. I really have never failed at anything else and I don’t know how to handle that. All in all I am a nice person who will go out of his way to help another. I also am a very jaded person who does not have a lot of faith or trust for the opposite sex. Sentence Combination Avoid consecutive sentences that end and begin, respectively, with the same word or phrase as occurs here: A common way to track the current state of systems is monitoring performance metrics. In such cases, replace the period between them with a comma and delete the second iteration of the word or phrase with which: â€Å"A common way to track the current state of systems is monitoring performance metrics, which show how assets are performing at the transaction level.† 2. Condensing by Subordination When a sentence includes two consecutive verb phrases, consider converting one to a subordinate clause. For example, note how the subject of this sentence is followed by two statements of fact: The renowned tea is a symbol of the city’s gracious hospitality and is often served in a glass to display its jade-green color. The first statement can easily be subsumed into the main clause as a parenthetical phrase: â€Å"The renowned tea, a symbol of the city’s gracious hospitality, is often served in a glass to display its jade-green color.† 3. Integration of Clauses Here, an introductory subordinate clause sets up an unnecessarily wordy sentence: For health care entities with similar classes of customers, they may be able to reduce the overall evaluation effort by applying the portfolio approach. The clause is easily integrated into the main clause by omitting for and treating â€Å"health care entities,† rather than they, as the sentence’s subject: â€Å"Health care entities with similar classes of customers may be able to reduce the overall evaluation effort by applying the portfolio approach.† 4. Denominalization Nominalization is the complication of prose by using nouns when employing the verb form of that noun, or revising the sentence to eliminate the need for a noun, produces more clear, concise prose; nouns, of course, are integral to prose but, especially in the case of formal nouns with such elements as -ation, they can be abused in the service of conveying authority. This sentence is not overly formal, but it is wordier than necessary: Furthermore, companies are taking backups of the production applications and storing them for indefinite periods. Denominalization- literally, â€Å"unnaming†- is simply a fancy way of saying â€Å"rephrasing to eliminate nouns.† Note that in this sentence, the noun backups can be converted to a verb, rendering the verb taking superfluous, and the final phrase can be condensed by transforming the adjective indefinite into an adverb, which enables deletion of the noun periods: â€Å"Furthermore, companies are backing up the production applications and storing them indefinitely.† The following sentence is an example of a statement with a double-decker nominalization: Management may find it beneficial to engage in a dialogue on a periodic basis regarding the organization’s policy. As in the previous example, one word easily replaces a phrase- â€Å"on a periodic basis† can be reduced to periodically: â€Å"Management may find it beneficial to periodically engage in a dialogue regarding the organization’s policy.† But further reduction is achieved by replacing the phrase â€Å"engage in a dialogue† with a synonymous word: â€Å"Management may find it beneficial to periodically discuss the organization’s policy.† 5. Employing Terms Rather Than Definitions One strategy to achieve conciseness is to avoid describing something by defining it; note the explanation in the following sentence: He was prone to making embarrassing mistakes in public. Here, the persons behavior can be described with a term that embodies the definition: â€Å"He was prone to committing faux pas.† 6. Deletion of Expletives The expletives â€Å"there is† and â€Å"there are† are poor substitutes for a strong subject; note how the following sentence gets off to a weak start: There are few, if any, finance and accounting departments that are not experiencing some form of extreme change. Expletives need not be excised in every case, but minimize their use by deleting such phrases in favor of the definite noun or noun phrase that follows (and delete the associated that that appears later in the sentence): â€Å"Few, if any, finance and accounting departments are not experiencing some form of extreme change.† 7. Avoiding Tautology Tautology is redundancy or repetition, such as shown here: Could you repeat that again? To repeat is to do something again, so this sentence is equivalent to â€Å"Could you say that again again?† Indicate the action one way or another: â€Å"Could you say that again?† or, more concisely, â€Å"Could you repeat that?† 8. Using Brief Modifiers When modifying a noun to provide more information about it, use a preceding adjective or phrasal adjective rather than an extended phrase following the noun. The following sentence demonstrates use of a verbose modifying phrase: She offered an explanation that was brief and to the point. This sentence can be tightened up by locating the description of the explanation before the noun: â€Å"She offered a brief, to-the-point explanation.† 9. Excising Single Words Sometimes, reducing a sentence by just one word improves it, as shown in the following examples: Rather than assessing all of the contracts, select a representative sample to assess. In the phrase â€Å"all of,† of is generally superfluous: â€Å"Rather than assessing all the contracts, select a representative sample to assess.† How is technology helping to change the way elderly people are cared for? In the phrase â€Å"helping to,† to is extraneous: How is technology helping change the way elderly people are cared for? That is the most annoying error I have ever seen, and also the most prevalent. Also, when it immediately follows and, is redundant: That is the most annoying error I have ever seen, and the most prevalent. 10. Avoiding Prolixity Refrain from florid, verbose descriptions. The following sentence is an extreme example of self-indulgent wordiness, but unless one is deliberately prolix in the service of humor, be vigilant about reining in excessively ornate prose: One might with the utmost confidence essay to prevail in a debate in which one asserts that possessing one’s own means of vehicular conveyance offers one greater flexibility than public transportation provides in the matter of travel to one’s place of learning or employment or to social occasions.
